Lining and filling the pond

The last thing done before placing the liner is to add a few inches of sifted sand onto the bottom of the pond.

The pond is slowly filled

Paving stone is sandwiched between the liner and polyurethane foam is used to glue the edge stones in place. The excess will be trimmed away later.

The main pond is filled

Sifted play sand is the last thing added to the excavated pit before the liner is put in place and filled. For this pond we used a .45mil EPDM rubber liner purchased from a local roofing supply store.  Liners can be purchased from garden supply stores or one can be made from rubber roofing material as was done in this pond.  Many books and pond suppliers will tell you that the roofing liners are made with nasty chemicals that will kill the fish but it is untrue.  The pond liner companies buy their liners from the roofing manufacturers!

Next some inexpensive pavers were "rolled" into the excess liner and edged with some native rocks I had been collecting.  The edging stones were "glued" in place with some "Great Stuff" spray foam. You can get a can of black dyed spray foam for about three times the cost from a pond supplier.  I just trim off the excess foam and spray paint any that is still exposed.
