I believe that teaching is not so much about what you do to students, but more about what you do for students. A teacher cannot force learning to take

place, but they can do a great deal to create an atmosphere were students’ want to learn. A student’s learning experience can be maximized by providing an orderly and predicable environment, through modeling behavior that is goal-oriented, reasonable, flexible and, where appropriate, punctuated by humor.

I am confident that all students can learn.  It is my belief that students must take responsibility for their own learning after being shown how.  Often when a student is told something, that information is soon forgotten.  Show a student

how to discover an answer on their own and they never forget it. Instead of teaching the ‘Where’ and ‘When,’ it is more important to teach them ‘How’ to discover these facts on their own.  Albert Einstein was once made fun of for not knowing his own telephone number, Einstein replied in his defense: "I never memorize information that I know I can look up."

I use technology in my lessons whenever possible because it speaks to all students regardless of learning style and ability. The average student, or the student with academic or behavioral deficiencies, often gets really motivated and succeeds with a technology-based activity.   Have half

your students write a book report on Christopher Columbus and the other half create a Power Point slide show or web page and you will quickly discover that kids are drawn to technology.

Special education is an area I am very enthusiastic about.   Every child has strengths and can learn, their ability and potential are what differ.  With a positive

atmosphere, children can be encouraged to learn and to perform to their full potential.  In the special education classroom setting, it is often hard

to  keep the interest of the students.  Creative lesson plans, technology and interesting topics are important factors in keeping the interest of a child.  Students can learn from every experience in life and it is important to help them get the most out of each experience.

There is no great secret to teaching.  The things that you liked most and remembered about your teachers, those kinds of lessons and activities, are what inspire children.

Inspiring children is what teaching is all about.  Taking pride in my profession and knowing I have made a difference is many children’s lives make me very proud to say, “I am a teacher!”
